Since 2005, our partner Ishpingo has been setting up a sustainable development programme based on participative agroforestry for local communities.
Its approach is rooted in reforestation based on trees that ultimately produce ingredients for the cosmetic & fragrance industry.
Ishpingo gives economic value to trees planted in its retorestation projects by creating a fair and sustainable value chain for essential oils.
Which encourages farmers to conserve and expand agroforestry plots, instead of turning to destructive monocultures or deforestation.
The organic, low-volume but high-impact nature of these essential oil exports means that just a few cartons shipped per year can significantly increase local incomes.
Thus reinforcing the long-term viability of community-led forest restoration in the Ecuadorian Amazon.
The Amazon :
a crucial biodiversity
under serious threat
The Amazon rainforest is home to nearly 10% of the planet’s terrestrial plant and animal species.
Since 2000, 76.2% of the forest has lost its resilience. So much so that in 2021, it began emitting carbon.
In 2023, a study showed that more than 25% of the original forest had been destroyed.
38% of the remaining forest was seeing its vital functions jeopardized.
As of today, the Amazon has reached a tipping point. It is no longer able to replenish its own rainfall.
Some parts are gradually
transforming into savanna, significantly reducing its carbon
absorption capacity.

Kichwa locals
suffer from poor
economic conditions
The Kichwa local populations are regrettably unfavored by today’s economic conditions.
For most, they are small farmers spread out a large territory and they usually tace a lot of problems to sell their production.
Since they haven’t got their own means of delivery toward urban centers, they are often subject to unfavorable shipping conditions, dictated by unscrupulous middle-men.

The essential oils produced under Ishpingo’s fair-trade program are a direct extension of the NGO’s Amazonian reforestation work.
Botanicals are distilled into rare, high-value essential oils that generates additional income for small producers.
